The department of physics was established in May 2011 and consists of college physics unit and applied physics unit. Currently, the department has 29 faculty members, including 7 professors, 11 associate professors, and 11 lecturers. Among them, one member is the National Millions of Talents Projects Candidate, three members are Dawning Scholars of Shanghai, one member is Pujiang Scholars of Shanghai, and one member is Famous Teachers of Shanghai.
The undergraduate major of applied physics was established in 2002, and began recruiting students in 2003. This major emphasizes on luminescent materials and display technology. By now, more than 300 students have graduated. The master's major of physics was established in 2010, which consists of three sub majors: condensed matter physics, optics, and theoretical physics. In 2012, the doctor’s sub major of optoelectronics physics and devices was established under the major of optical engineering, and began recruiting students in 2014. The physics department has laboratories of more than 600 square meters; the total value of the experimental equipment is over 10 million RMB. By now, more than 200 graduate students have obtained their degrees.
The physics department has one Shanghai high quality courses "college physics", three Shanghai key courses "electromagnetics", "optics", and "quantum mechanics", and one Shanghai English demonstration course "college physics in English". Besides the teaching tasks for its own applied physics major, the department of physics also teaches college physics for the whole university, which holds about 5000 students per year.
Since 2015, the physics department has undertaken seven national research projects and six provincial research projects; and published more than 100 papers in important journals both in China and abroad, including more than 80 SCI papers and more than 10 EI papers. Meanwhile, the department published five books. Some of the papers are published in famous journals, such as J. Phys. Chem. Lett., Carbon, Phys. Rev. C, Appl. Phys. Lett., Opt. Express, Appl. Surf. Sci., and J. Alloy. Compd., etc.
In addition to its own development, the physics department actively participates in the development of other disciplines in the university. The department cooperates widely with the school of optical-electrical and computer engineering, the school of energy and power engineering, and the school of materials science and engineering. The physics department is supportive to the engineering science, and contributes in the coordinated development of the university.
